When a fresh Windows install is actually the right fix
Not every slow or glitchy computer needs a reinstall — sometimes a cleanup and an SSD upgrade solves it. But a fresh Windows installation is the right call when a system has years of accumulated software conflicts, a corrupted system file that won't repair itself, a virus infection that's gone deep enough that cleanup alone can't be trusted, or when you're moving from an unsupported version like Windows 7 to something still receiving security updates. We diagnose first and tell you honestly which situation you're in before recommending a reinstall.
Which Windows version is right for your machine
We install Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and 11, and the right choice depends on your hardware, not just personal preference:
- Windows 11 — best for laptops from the last 4–5 years with compatible processors, TPM support and enough RAM. Gets the longest run of security updates.
- Windows 10 — a solid, stable choice for slightly older hardware that doesn't meet Windows 11's requirements, or for software that hasn't been tested on 11 yet.
- Windows 8.1 — occasionally needed for specific legacy software or hardware drivers that were never updated for newer versions.
- Windows 7 — mainly relevant for older machines running specialised legacy software with no viable upgrade path. We'll flag the security trade-offs of staying on it.
If you're not sure which fits your laptop or desktop, tell us the brand, model and roughly how old it is — we'll tell you what it can realistically run before you decide.
What happens on a Windows installation visit
1. Backup first, always
A clean install wipes the drive. Before anything else, we back up your documents, photos and any files you flag as important — to an external drive, a second drive in the machine, or cloud storage, depending on what you have available. We confirm the backup is complete before touching the installation.
2. Clean installation
We install the Windows version that fits your hardware, partition the drive properly, and get the system fully updated with the latest patches — not just the base install.
3. Drivers, so everything actually works
A fresh install without the right drivers means a laptop with no Wi-Fi, a graphics card running at half performance, or a touchpad that doesn't respond properly. We install the correct drivers for your specific model — graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, chipset and touchpad — rather than relying on Windows' generic defaults.
4. Software setup
This is the part people often forget to ask for and then have to figure out themselves. We set up the software you actually use day to day:
- Microsoft Office or a compatible office suite for documents, spreadsheets and presentations
- A web browser of your choice, with your bookmarks and settings if recoverable from backup
- PDF readers and basic document tools
- Antivirus and security software, configured and running
- Media players, compression tools (WinRAR/7-Zip), and any specific software for your work — accounting tools, design software, or anything else you tell us you need
5. Files restored, and a walkthrough
Once the system is set up, we restore your backed-up files to where you expect to find them, and walk through what's changed — especially useful if you're moving from an older Windows version with a different layout.
A note on genuine software
We install and activate Windows and software using properly licensed methods, and we're upfront with you about licensing costs where they apply, rather than cutting corners that leave you with an unstable or unsupported system down the line.
